Celebration of the 34th edition of the International Day of Older Persons (JIPA)

Cameroon joined the rest of the globe to commemorate the 34th edition International Day of Older Persons on October 01, 2024. Placed under the theme:

"The part we play", the objective of this edition was to strengthen the promotion of the social inclusion of older persons in the face of a transformational world for an inclusive development context.

On this occasion, the Minister of Social Affairs, Mrs Pauline Irène NGUENE made a press declaration in the conference room 1 of her ministerial department. She said that ageing does not mean becoming useless and it is not synonymous to dependency and care. She highlighted the fact that the elderly are at the center of the social inclusion  and social justice policy of the President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya. She equally talked about international and national legal framework for the protection of the rights of older persons as well as the contributions of the elderly in nation building, fostering peace and social cohesion. It is essential to recognize the rights of the elderly. It is a social duty and a societal commitment. She concluded by exhorting the older persons to develop the younger generations because their social participation will enable them to flourish and play the social role assigned to them by the President of the Republic.
