Éducation Plus Cameroun
This initiative is under the supervision of MINAS.
How to reduce HIV infections and empower teenage girls and young women?
This is the challenge of UNAIDS and other UN agencies such as UNESCO, UNICEF, UNFPA and UN Women. Cameroon is among the countries invited to participate in this new initiative which will be implemented from 2021-2025. This was the subject of the audience granted by the Minister of Social Affairs, Pauline Irène Nguene, to the Heads of Agency on March 27, 2020. On this occasion, they presented the urgent need to act given the vulnerability of young girls to HIV, and the low rate of school attendance. Hence the need of adopting a holistic and multisectoral approach that takes into account the various interconnections that exist between education, health, sexual violence, gender inequality and women's empowerment.
The expectations on Cameroon’s side include: an adhesion in terms of policy and commitment at the highest level; a contribution to the implementation of the initiative in the areas where the ministry has expertise; dialogue with other actors and a participation in high-level meetings to support advocacy and create synergies. The Minister of Social Affairs reiterated the commitment of her department as concerns the education of girls, particularly through social centres and social action services in schools. Special attention is given to girls with disabilities and indigenous youth through awareness-raising platforms. Other bodies are at work, such as the child protection platform, the social development platform, CONRHA, and the various organisations delivering care to our target populations.
