HISTORY

In memory of the massacre of innocent children in Soweto in 1976 by the racist apartheid regime then in power in South Africa, the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), known today as African Union (AU), established through Resolution CMRes-1290 (XL) from July 1990, the Day of the African Child which is celebrated on June 16 of every year.
Beyond this commemoration, it is for African states concerned about the well-being of their children and thus the future of the continent, to mark a pause and take stock of the situation of the violation of children’s rights  and take appropriate measures to ensure their well-being. That is why a different reflection theme is chosen every year by the African Union.
True to its international commitments, Cameroon, as a member of the African Union and in application of the provisions of the above-mentioned resolution, joins other Member States to celebrate this day.
