The Ministry of Social Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education and the UNDP,

organised an educational talk with youth and street children at the Yaoundé Listening and Transit Centre on December 4. They have been recruited by the Yaoundé Urban Community as part of the Project for the reinsertion and socioeconomic inclusion of youth and street children (PIJER), the pilot phase of which is being rolled out in the cities of Douala, Ngaoundéré and Yaoundé. They are in the process of being resocialised through training in moral, civic and entrepreneurial rearmament (REAMORCE) and education in an open environment (EMO).

The Minister of Social Affairs, Pauline Irène NGUENE, and the Minister of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, MOUNOUNA FOUTSOU, advised them on the theme of “Patriotism and Responsibility.”

  The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is ready to support the Cameroonian government in its fight against street children.

The aim of the two-phase project is to provide these disadvantaged young people with paid employment in green jobs such as landscaping gardens and public parks, cleaning drains, etc. This will enable them to settle down and contribute to the development of the city, hence the collaboration with the mayors of the towns concerned, who have also agreed to special recruitment on a contractual basis.

A visit to the various sites and work routes provided an opportunity to appreciate the commitment of these children in the Bois Saint Anastasie in Yaoundé and other thoroughfares in the city.
