Official launch of the Day of the African Child 2021

The Official launching ceremony of the 31st edition of the Day of the African Child in Cameroon took place on Tuesday June 1, 2021 at the Yaounde Town Hall. Presided over by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Social Affairs, personal representative of the Minister, the ceremony brought together different actors and stakeholders in the child protection chain, development partners, the junior parliamentarians and children among others.

The African theme for this year is “30 years after the adoption of the Charter: let’s accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2040 for an Africa fit for children”. The National theme is “Protect every child from violence, exploitation, neglect and abuse: a priority for the Cameroonian Government”. The Cameroon theme ties with aspiration No 7 of Agenda 2040 which states that “Every child is protected against violence, exploitation, neglect and abuse”. The objective of this edition of the Day of the African Child is to make a prospective assessment of actions to fight against violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of children in Cameroon.

The secretary General in her speech highlighted the different forms of violence suffered by children and stressed on the importance of protecting children form all forms of violence, exploitation, neglect and abuse because the children are the future of our country. She reiterated Cameroon’s commitment to social justice and the fight against social exclusion in social policy. June was declared the month of the child and will henceforth be observed as such in Cameroon.

 Child protection focal points were installed to work for better protection of the rights and wellbeing of the child in Cameroon.

Activities planned for this year’s celebration will be as follows;

  • Holding of the meeting of Board of Directors at CAO Bepanda, Douala
  • Holding of the 2nd session for the year 2021, of the National Platform for social protection of the child in Cameroon.
  • Holding of the 22nd session of the Children Parliament
  • Advocacy meeting with Parliamentarians and various actors
  • Celebration of the 31st edition of the Day of the African Child.
